Each year we celebrate our independence as a nation on July 4th. We are entertained, fed, hydrated, wined and dined. We enjoy the cool water of a swimming pool or lake. We partake in a variety of outdoor activities including boating, softball, grilling, concerts and running a 5K. We attend parades with marching bands, drill teams, floats and dance teams. For most we look forward to the fireworks that culminate each evening over the July 4th weekend. These fireworks give us the opportunity to express belief in our freedoms and independence.
Through all of this our freedoms are constantly being watched and monitored. Around the world millions of military personnel and their adjunct government support staff keep close watch. While we are celebrating they are standing watch. On duty. Looking for the next attack on our freedoms and beliefs.
When you are out and about and come upon someone in uniform please stop and thank them. A simple handshake and ‘thank you’ goes a long way. Let them know you appreciate their sacrifices to family and country. Because of them and every veteran’s past service we live in the greatest country on earth.
