If you’re buying a new loft or condo, walking into your unit the first time, keys in hand, can be a bit overwhelming. If this is your first home, you may not have much in the way of essentials.
After selling condos for years in downtown St Louis, here are a few tips we’d love to share with the hope it will help.
Window Treatments
Aside from improving the overall aesthetic of your new home, window treatments serve a variety of useful purposes.
- They help you maintain privacy. Condos and lofts tend to be high density housing so you want to make sure you’re not inadvertently giving neighbors anything to see.
- Helps keep your unit cooler in the summer. Window treatments can be viewed as “window insulation” keeping some airspace between your window glass and the ambient air in your unit.
- Keep you warmer in the winter! See #2 above.
After years in this business in downtown St Louis, we’ve learned this is probably the number one item to consider after your purchase if your unit doesn’t already have them.
Where’s the Mop!?
No matter what, you want to do an initial deep cleaning of your unit when you move in. Get your unit the way you want it in the condition you want it.
Hiring a good cleaning company or person to give your new unit the once over is always a good idea.
Appliances
Your unit typically comes with appliances. But one thing we know! Make sure if you don’t have appliances already that you measure what sizes you’ll need for each appliance.
There may be space for a standard size fridge or there may not. Make sure you take measurements to save yourself a lot of hassle before you buy.
Basic Needs & Stuff
Don’t forget the stuff you’ll need to be comfortable. The first few nights you might spend getting your things organized. When you’re moving, who knows what box your toothbrush is in or worse, the coffee maker.
A small ditty bag with shampoo, your toothbrush, some soap and a hairbrush (you get the idea!) makes all the difference to your comfort.
Besides, you’ll need some floss to get the BBQ out of your teeth after your short walk to one of many AWESOME BBQ spots in downtown St Louis so don’t forget the floss. It’s essential!
