Below is a short list of sites we love to visit when we go to downtown St. Louis. St. Louis has a rich history as virtually every settler going west staged out of St. Louis before moving out west in the 19th century.
Gateway Arch
At the heart of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park lies the city’s most recognizable symbol, the Gateway Arch. The 625 feet high monument is the tallest in the country.
There’s a tram ride to the top of the observation platform that gives a beautiful view of the Gateway City. You can learn about the history of the Gateway City and its role in the westward expansion.
Onsite, there’s a gift shop, the Arch Cafe, a museum to learn about the history of the Native Americans, pioneers and explorers who passed through St. Louis.
The Old Courthouse
This massive domed building is located near Market Street and has been part of some of the most critical trials in the nation.
The Old Courthouse has witnessed a lot of high-profile cases since the mid-1800s. From the case of Dred Scott’s freedom from slavery to Suffragist Virginia Louisa Minor fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens.
Aside from its historical importance, the Old Courthouse now exhibits some of the Museum of Westward Expansions arts.
Missouri Botanical Garden
Known as the Shaw Garden, the Missouri Botanical Garden was carefully built by Henry Shaw in 1859. Since then, it has grown to be a National Historic Landmark. It is the center of education, ecological conservation, science, and horticulture in St. Louis.
The garden is considered one of the top botanical gardens in the U.S. and houses 79 acres of botanical displays. You can enjoy the lovely rose garden, the climatron, the one-of-a-kind aqua tunnel built under the water lily pool, and their nationally acclaimed herbarium.
