St. Louis is known as one of the best sports cities in the US. As one of the longtime soccer hotbeds in America, it is a major sport in St. Louis. Mainly because of its rich soccer history involving several professional teams. Notably the St. Louis Stars of the National Professional Soccer League and the Raiders of the North American Soccer League. Additionally, the National Soccer Hall of Fame has 20 prominent figures from St. Louis, further enriching its legacy.
First Major Soccer League (MLS) Team in St. Louis
Despite having a long history in soccer, it took until 2023 for St. Louis to get its first MLS team, the St. Louis City SC. The team was founded in 2020, becoming the league’s 29th franchise. It is the first MLS club with a majority-female ownership, led by Carolyn Kindle Betz.
Following the introduction of the team is the unwavering support and passion of St. Louis soccer fans. St. Louis City gained popularity quickly, with locals following them in every game.
But this is only the beginning of the team’s many firsts.
Road to Success: Achievements of St. Louis City SC
St. Louis City SC had a strong start at the beginning of their season by winning their first five games. On their fourth win, they broke the record of the 2009 Seattle Sounders. The win made them the best-starting expansion team in MLS history.
Adding to their list of achievements, Roman Bürki (goalkeeper) and Tim Parker (center-back) made this season’s MLS All-Star Game. They are also the captain and vice-captain of the team.
Finally, the St. Louis City SC won first place in the Western Conference for their recent record-breaking achievement! The first team in MLS history to win the Western Conference title during their inaugural season. They finished with a historical record of 17-12-15 (56 points). Their 17 wins set the record for the most wins by an expansion team in their first season. Additionally, 56 points is the second-highest points record by an expansion team.
